It's a truism that if some investment is easy ~ really trivial ~ to make, it's gonna have a rotten return. Think S&P 500 for the past 10 years, or gold mutual funds, they will all have god-awful returns over the long-term. As physical gold is much more difficult to source and store, it will probably have a much better return. What this means, unfortunately, is that we are probably going to have a BIG WAR sometime in the next 10 years, before the bear market and depression are over.

[...] Part one of this three-part series explored some potential problems with offshore bank accounts, trusts and insurance policies. Part two, drawn from a January 2010 article I wrote for CFA Magazine, covers gold storage and real estate: GOLD STORAGE ACCOUNTS MAY NOT CONTAIN GOLD A traditional, simple way to move money offshore is to buy gold or silver bullion and have it stored in a foreign vault. Dozens of firms, ranging from Swiss banks to state mints to coin dealers offer such services. But they’re not all what they claim to be. [...]

Maybe that’s why a lot of foreigners are buy U.S. real estate these days ???
Maybe as bad as the situation in the U.S. is it’s better than most anywhere else.
An RE may even provide a return if your lucky.

There is always an element of foolishness when one puts ones assets in the hands of another. However , sometimes its the only way to diversify. Cash involves trust of governments and their bureaucrats. Gold requires safe storage. Real estate is high maintenance . The list goes on. Problems to the left and problems to the right.

Hi Newfy777. Gold mining is one of the biggest industries in Western Australia where the Perth Mint has existed for a lot longer than the Australian Federal Government. The Perth Mint is part owned and guaranteed by the state (not federal) government of Western Australia which retains the constitutional right to independence (see the Australian Constitution Act, amended 1977). Your theoretical government grab would collapse the economy and the currency.
I have my account at the Perth Mint and have deposited and withdrawn gold in person for years. It doesn't beat gold in your own possession but it's a close second.
Warm Regards from Perth, Western Australia, currently enjoying a 43 degrees celcius (111 Fahrenheit) summer day.

and Peter Schiff keeps telling his clients not to worry..the physical gold and silver he is putting his clients into stored in Australia at the Perth Mint is perfectly safe?..its risky enough to have your physical precious metals stored in the U.S. let alone in another country that could pass a law tomorrow morning that allows its government to confiscate every oz. sitting in storage at the Perth mint that very same evening if there is some unforeseen event where its gov. claims it needs it to keep the country running[or whatever reason].. agree with a lot of what Peter says but absolutely,100% against storing clients gold and silver in another country..
