Yesterday, on May 10, 1924, J. Edgar Hoover began his 48-year tenure as Director of the FBI.
Although it seemed like a healthy promotion in the role of public service, Hoover actually played a large, unelected role in shaping America over the following decades.
Hoover’s story begins with America’s paranoia of communism. In the late 1910’s Hoover became a special assistant to the Attorney General of the Department of Justice. His special role was to oversee the round-up and mass deportation of suspected communists.
The Russian revolution, led by Vladimir Lenin had just taken place, and many of the labor union strikes in the United States were blamed on the “communist” immigrants, and their influence.
At the time, workers’ rights were considered a threat to the American way of life.
So, fear to permeated American society on both sides of the political spectrum. Several years later, in 1919 anarchists, afraid of radical leftists, bombed law enforcement and government officials. Bombs were reported in Boston, Cleveland, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City.
Yet, by this time, Hoover had already been appointed the Head of the General Intelligence Division by Attorney General Palmer. The bombings ignited government action. A series of raids were executed to capture political dissidents, and suspected anarchists and communists, which Hoover would have been heavily involved in.
So, by 1924 Hoover had made a name for himself. He was appointed the Director of the FBI.
Post WWII, Hoover was deeply entrenched in the American bureaucracy.
For example, Hoover approved of illegally infiltrating and spying on the American Civil Liberties Union, which was formed in response to government raids in 1919.
Hoover also had spies throughout the government, even inside the Supreme Court. So his power was unrivalled.
Here’s the political bureaucrat’s “natural conclusion”:
When the Cold War began Hoover wanted responsibility for both domestic and foreign intelligence initiatives to… “fight the communists.”
But Harry Truman, the sitting President at the time, already believed Hoover had too much power.
In 1945, Truman wrote:
“We want no Gestapo or secret police. The FBI is tending in the direction. They are dabbling in sex life scandals and plan blackmail when they should be catching criminals.”
You can see how overt Truman made his opinion of the intelligence agency.
He didn’t think highly of it.
So in 1947, Truman created the Central Intelligence Agency to gather and report intelligence on foreign affairs.
Hoover never forgave him for denying him power. All of a sudden reports were coming out of alleged communists inside the Truman administration from no one else but the young, ambitious, Richard Nixon.
Nixon used the inside info to throttle on Truman’s administration winning the favour of “devoted Americans.”
That is the power of unelected bureaucrats.
They can bring down entire administrations, groom presidents, and even get people elected…
Unfortunately today, we see much of the same.

Yet, this election is already “under control.”
The FBI has announced they are hard at work combating disinformation and misinformation that could undermine the 2024 election process.
No matter who gets elected, what come’s next is most likely more of Hoover’s America.
